You saw a new version announced, or WordPress offered you an update and it would not install. Most of the time these are the same thing, and nothing is broken.
The developer released a new version. Your dashboard found out about it. We have not packaged it yet.
What is actually happening
We pull new versions daily and aim to have them ready within 24 to 48 hours of the developer’s release. Until ours is ready, WordPress can see a version it cannot get from us. So the update either sits there doing nothing or fails when you click it.
Wait a day and try again. That is the fix for almost all of these.
Check whether ours has landed
Recent Updates lists what we have packaged and when. If your plugin is on it with today’s date, the new version is ready and you can update. If it is not there yet, that is your answer and there is nothing to fix.
If it has been a couple of days and the update still will not go through, open a ticket. We will install that product on our test server and reproduce it. We do not want things broken any more than you do.
If you need same-day updates
Then buy that particular plugin directly from the developer. That is the honest answer.
We are a redistributor. A day or two behind the release is what redistribution looks like, and we publish that number rather than promise you instant. For most plugins on most sites the gap does not matter. For the one plugin your business runs on, it might, and paying the developer for that one is a reasonable thing to do.
When it is not the timing
Two other things produce a failed or missing update, and both are fixable right now.
Nothing is set up yet. No Update Manager installed, no update key entered, or a key entered against the wrong item. See My updates are not showing up in WordPress.
The folder could not be overwritten. WordPress tells you an error occurred while updating. See An error occurred while updating.
The fix that works when nothing else does
Install the new version over the top of the old one by hand.
- Download the current version from your account dashboard on 99plugs.com.
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose the zip.
- WordPress asks whether to replace the current version with the uploaded one. Say yes.
Your settings and your content stay where they are. This is a normal WordPress operation, not a last resort, and it is what our support team does when an update refuses to go through.
